BARRE DIAMETER2015-03-12T10:15:40+00:00

The diameter for Alvas wood barres are 1-7/8”, + or – 1/8”. Wood will not be perfectly round.

BARRE FINISH2017-07-13T15:00:51+00:00

Barres are hand-sanded smooth and ready to use. Adding a clear coat finish is unnecessary. As the wood barre is used, the natural oils from hands give the barres a hand-rubbed look that is traditional. However, the wood barres arrive ready to be painted, lacquered or stained if desired.

BARRE HEIGHT2016-07-14T11:54:30+00:00

Traditionally, a ballet barre should be approximately waist height of the user.
However, the following statistics are very popular:
Single barre:    32” – 46” from floor (waist level)
Double barre:  32” – 34” lower barre; 44” – 46” from the floor for upper barre
Distance from wall to barre:   Inside = 7-1/4” (approx) Outside = 9” (approx)

BARRE HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT2017-08-03T11:50:37+00:00

Barre height can be adjusted on Wall Mount Adjustable Brackets, Free Standing Frames or Floor Mount Frames without uninstalling the Extension Units.

Instructions:

  1. Grab the Barre next to where the Extension shoulders touch the wood
  2. Give the Barre an up and down wiggle, as needed, while loosening or tightening the Wingnut.
  3. Then slide it up or down the Channel and wiggle to re-tighten the Wingnut.

The Extension Units can also be made so they do not adjust by hand, while still leaving the option to raise and lower the barre height in the future. To do so, replace the Large Wingnut with a Hex Nut on the Extension.

BARRE WARP TOLERANCE2017-04-20T06:24:28+00:00

Perfect straightness is difficult to obtain in a natural product like wood.

Warp tolerance diagram

  1. Sight down barre to determine apex of the warp.
  2. Center the 4’ level on the apex and secure the level to the barre (using tape, tie, etc) as shown in the diagram.
  3. Attempt to slide the 3/16” drill bit into the gap.
  4. If the drill bit slides freely and completely through the gap, then the barre is beyond our warp tolerance. Immediately call Alvas for return instructions.
CALCULATE SQUARE YARDS2015-03-12T10:51:09+00:00

Length (Ft) x Width (Ft) / 9 = Sq Yds

CALCULATE TAPE NEEDED FOR MATLAY/MARLAY2016-07-28T11:44:16+00:00

Gaffers Tape
(Ideal for the outside perimeter of the floor)
1 roll = 180 ft (2″ x 60 yds)
How to calculate the total length needed (in feet) of the outside perimeter of the floor:

  1. Add together all of the lengths of the outside of your floor to get the Total Perimeter
  2. Total Perimeter / 180 = Total Length of Gaffers Tape Needed*

Vinyl Tape
(Ideal for the inner seams of the floor)
1 roll = 108 ft (2″ x 36 yds)
How to calculate the total length needed (in feet) of the inner seams of the floor:

  1. Add together all of the lengths of the inner seams of your floor
  2. Total Length of Inner Seams / 108 = Total Length of Vinyl Tape Needed*

* If your total calculated length needed is close to the total length of the roll of tape (whether Gaffers or Vinyl), we recommend purchasing an additional roll of that tape.

CANCELLATION POLICY2018-04-26T08:35:08+00:00

If an order has already been packed and you (or your company) notifies Alvas you want to cancel the order, we will charge a 25% restock/handling fee.

CLEANING BARRES2015-03-12T10:51:22+00:00

Traditional ballet barres are sanded smooth raw wood, which allow oil from the hands to be absorbed into the wood eventually forming a patina. However, sanitary wipes may be used to clean the surface.

CLEANING GLASSLESS MIRRORS2016-04-20T13:34:27+00:00

Before attempting to clean the glassless mirror, use compressed air (i.e. Dust Off®, which can be found in most photographic or office supply stores) to make sure all dust and debris are off the mirror.

Water Spots:
Use an optical grade 100% cotton cleaning cloth (no lint) and a window cleaner (i.e. Windex®). Apply Windex® to cloth until cloth is damp (saturated, but not dripping). Clean the mirror in one direction, then wipe using a fresh part of the cloth after each pass.

Handle by holding along edges only. (When holding the mirror along the edge, do not press down on the mirror surface with your finger nails.) Do not put any weight or object on the mirror surface in any position.

CLEANING MATLAY/MARLAY2017-04-20T06:24:29+00:00

Regular cleaning is necessary for safety precautions and to prolong the life of your floor. Alvas recommends sweeping your floor daily with a clean, dry dust mop. Thorough cleaning should be done regularly (weekly), but may need to be done more or less frequently depending on usage. Alvas also offers a Matlay/Marlay cleaning and re-taping service. Contact us for more information.

Thorough Cleaning Instructions:
Supplies Needed for Cleaning

  • Clean, Dry Dust Mop
  • Clean Mop
  • Clean Mop Bucket
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Hot Water (As hot as you can get it)

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly sweep the Matlay/Marlay with a clean dust mop prior to mopping the floor.
  2. Fill the mop bucket with three parts hot water and one part distilled white vinegar. You do not need to fill the bucket up all the way, however the ratio of 75% water and 25% distilled white vinegar should remain the same.
  3. Apply intense force while mopping to remove the body oils and dirt. (Remember that body oils and dirt have been ground into the Matlay/Marlay with countless hours of dancing. Barefoot dancing compound this situation)
  4. Ensure the mixture you are using is hot and clean, which means you may need to change out the bucket multiple times while cleaning the Matlay/Marlay. If you mop with dirty and/or cool water, you will just be spreading the dirt and oils around the floor. You will need to cut the oil with hot water and vinegar to get it up and off of the floor. When the bucket water stays clear then all the oil is off the floor.
DANCING ON UNSPRUNG SURFACES2015-09-03T15:44:00+00:00

Dancing on a surface without a floating (sprung) subfloor is hard on the body and may hurt dancers. The chronic “hammering” of the body against a hard surface takes a toll on joints, tendons and bones. Overtime, this can lead to stress fractures, or shin splints. For this reason, it is highly recommended to use a floating subfloor.

FLOATING SUBFLOOR PLYWOOD2015-07-22T13:34:29+00:00

Alvas Floating Subfloor is designed to use 9-Lamination 5′ x 5′ x 1/2″ Baltic Birch Plywood Sheets. The 9-crisscross laminations within the plywood makes it very stiff, allowing it to flex both ways evenly. This specific plywood has better integrity and will not delaminate. Regular types of plywood flex one way more than the other and the layers can become delaminated.

The 5′ x 5′ x 1/2″ size of this plywood is less expensive than 4′ x 8′ x 1/2″ sheets because the length of the wood grain is shorter (5′ long vs 8′ long). We recommend starting with North American Plywood as your wood source, or they may recommend a dealer near you.

Any variation from the Alvas DIY Instructions (included in the Alvas Floating Subfloor Starter Kit) will invalidate Alvas warranty.

FLOATING SUBFLOOR VS CARPET PADDING OR FOAMS2017-04-20T06:24:28+00:00

Some people believe that using carpet padding or foam underneath “marley” is a suitable substitute for a floating subfloor. This is a common misconception. While floating subfloors are known for absorbing impact, they also provide resilience by spreading the impact of jumps/leaps over a wide area rather than just where the foot lands, and rebound quickly. Carpet padding and foams not only concentrate the impact of the pressure of where the foot lands, but also rebounds much slower.

FLOOR SHOCK ABSORBENCY2015-03-12T10:59:34+00:00

Sometimes “marley” or vinyl is misconstrued as adding some shock absorbency but Alvas disagrees. Shock absorbency should be done with a floating type of subfloor and the vinyl should always be laid on a hard surface. The vinyl with padding underneath is not recommended, especially with pointe shoes or anyone pointe-loading the vinyl. The vinyl will sink in if it has padding underneath it. A thinner vinyl on top of a hard surface is the optimum situation.

HOW TO REMOVE A WRINKLE FROM GLASSLESS MIRRORS2016-04-20T13:34:52+00:00

A heat gun can be used to remove wrinkles from the glassless mirror. Very carefully, hold heat gun at 4’’ or more away from the mirror. Move in a circular fashion, working towards outside edge. Always keep the heat gun moving in order to avoid burning the mirror film.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR USE OF MATLAY/MARLAY2017-04-20T06:24:28+00:00

On an outdoor surface, because of the heat of the sun, only the white side up of the white/black Matlay floor may be used. The gray and black floor gets too hot in the sun and can cause burns. Keep in mind possible inclement weather, as this could cause safety concerns as well. Sweat, any kind of humidity or moisture can cause a slippery surface. If it gets wet, it must be dried off. On an indoor surface, any color Matlay/Marlay is suitable.

INSTALLATIONS & ASSEMBLIES2018-05-04T09:58:58+00:00

A consultation is required prior to Alvas installing product.

The on-site local consultation fee is $150.00. This fee will be credited back to the customer if purchase and installation is made, and the product cost is over $1,000.00. For long distance consultations, contact us for more information.

PROP 65 WARNING2018-10-11T08:47:01+00:00

Alvas Supports Proposition 65

Alvas Barres Floors Mirrors (Alvas BFM) strives to remain wholly compliant with all required California regulations and is committed to providing safe, high quality products for our customers.

We do not manufacture children’s toys or child-care products.

Alvas pvc vinyl dance flooring (Matlay and Marlay) are phthalate and lead free.

Alvas Matlay and Alvas Marlay are both not formulated with nor known to contain phthalates or lead.

However, we strongly urge California consumers (and those residing in other states as well) to avoid purchasing vinyl covered products that do not conform to all state and federal content and labeling regulations. If you cannot easily locate a Proposition 65 warning on these types of vinyl covered products, you should consider shopping elsewhere.

For more information about Proposition 65 and its current complete substance list, please contact OEHHA’s Proposition 65 program at (916) 445-6900, or visit http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65.html.

You can find more information about California AB 1108 here: AB 1108

California Proposition 65

California residents are generally familiar with California Proposition 65 warnings because they see them so frequently. Citizens of other states who purchase goods made or sold by companies doing business in California also encounter these notices and may find them confusing or troubling. We offer the following to provide some clarity to them and hope all our customers will find it informative and beneficial.

Proposition 65 (“The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986”) is a California state law. Its goal are to protect drinking water sources from toxic substances that cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm and also to minimize or eliminate exposure of any type to those chemicals by requiring advance warnings of their presence.

Two requirements of Proposition 65 are:
• Each year, California’s Governor must publish a list of substances determined by the state to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm. Hundreds chemicals are currently listed.
• Any entity doing business in California and/or selling products to California residents must provide buyers of products containing any listed chemical with a “reasonable warning” against risk of exposure to those substances.

This is our Proposition 65 warning:
WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

Similar warnings must be posted at locations where listed substances or products containing them are sold, used or stored–including but not limited to–hardware suppliers, grocery stores, drug stores, medical facilities, government agencies, retail stores and parking garages.

A warning of this type is also required for such commonly used products these: goods made of or containing leather, vinyl, foam, plastics and other synthetics; glassware, ceramics and tableware; batteries and/or products containing batteries; beauty and personal hygiene products (including first-aid kits and lotions); medicines, alcohol and even fish.

More About Proposition 65
Proposition 65 is unique in several ways:

Unlike California regulatory statute AB 1108 or federal regulations imposed by the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CSPSIA), Proposition 65 does not restrict or regulate sale of goods containing listed chemicals. Nor does it apply only to products used by children or to care for children. Proposition 65 warnings must be provided to California residents of every age. While this law does specify maximum permitted “safe harbor” limits for listed substances, there are no corresponding minimum amounts. Any detectable amount of a listed substance requires sellers to warn consumers against a risk of possible exposure. Proposition 65 lists only four of six phthalates regulated by AB 1108 and CPSIA (DEHP, DBP, BBP and DIDP). One additional phthalate (DnHP) not regulated by CPSIA or California AB 1108 is listed under Proposition 65:

Phthalate Regulation
Phthalates, a family of chemicals that make plastics soft and pliable, are commonly used in the manufacture of PVC vinyl material. A wide spectrum of products are fabricated from PVC vinyl including furniture, shoes, purses, toys, bags, baby bibs, sporting equipment and hand tools.
Both federal (CPSIA) and California (AB1108) law limit the amount of certain phthalates that can be used in children’s toys and child care items.

A children’s toy is a product designed or intended by the manufacturer to be used by children when they play. A child-care article is defined as a product designed or intended by the manufacturer to facilitate sleep, relaxation or the feeding of children, or to help children with sucking or teething.

Toys used by children over the age of 3 but under age 12 that cannot be placed in a child’s mouth cannot contain phthalates known as: DEHP, DBP or BBP in concentrations greater than 0.1%.

Toys used by children younger than 3 years old or that may possibly be placed in a child’s mouth–as well as all child-care items–must not contain phthalates known as DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP or DnOP in concentrations greater than 0.1%.

REMOVING TAPE RESIDUE2017-04-20T06:24:28+00:00

First, thoroughly sweep the Matlay/Marlay with a clean dust mop. Dab denatured alcohol onto a clean cotton cloth until a portion of the cloth becomes saturated. Rub the saturated cloth onto affected area (with the tape residue) in a back and forth motion until the residue is gone. If the residue still has not been removed, then dab turpentine onto a clean cotton cloth until a portion of the cloth becomes saturated. Rub the saturated cloth onto affected area (with the tape residue) in a back and forth motion until the residue is gone. Once the residue is removed, rub the affected area again with denatured alcohol (same procedure). The denatured alcohol will remove the slippery residue that turpentine will leave behind.

Alvas also offers a Matlay/Marlay cleaning and re-taping service. Contact us for more information.

ROSIN & WOOD VS VINYL (MARLEY-TYPE FLOORING)2016-07-28T11:46:36+00:00

Rosin has worked well for many years on hardwood floors. In the past, people even sprayed Coca-Cola, or anything sticky, if the floor was too slippery. Today, most dancers are choosing vinyl because it’s easier to maintain that moderate surface texture (not too slippery and not too sticky).

Some people are unaware that when dancing on hardwood floors, they’re not really dancing on hardwood. They’re dancing on paint that has been put on the wood to protect and preserve it. The old oil-based varnish inherently had a bit of sticky surface itself and when rosin gets together with that it can form spots that are too sticky at times- and then add sweat or body oils to it and it can easily become slippery as well. Vinyl has moderated this issue and that’s one of the reasons it has become so prevalent and popular.

Using rosin on vinyl will work temporarily to give a stickier surface, however it may ruin the surface for future. It’s very hard to get the rosin residue off the vinyl, but it can be done if the vinyl is cleaned and maintained properly. (See Matlay/Marlay Cleaning Instructions)

STORING MATLAY/MARLAY2016-04-20T13:36:49+00:00

Ensure Matlay/Marlay is dry, clean of any foreign substances (such as grease, oil, dirt, etc) and all tape is removed before rolling it up for storage. Matlay/Marlay should be rolled evenly and tightly, and then stored horizontally on an even, flat and smooth surface with no heavy objects on top of it.

TAP DANCING ON VINYL MARLEY-TYPE FLOORING2015-07-22T14:10:59+00:00

Yes, you can tap on a marley-type floor. “Marley” has become the prevalent choice of surface for most dance studios. Before choosing whether marley-type flooring or hardwood is best for you, here are a few things to consider:

One of the main differences between tap dancing on hardwood vs “marley” is surface texture. Tap dancers love dancing on wood because that’s what they’ve grown accustomed to. However, some people are unaware that when dancing on hardwood floors, they are not really dancing on hardwood. They are dancing on paint that has been put on the wood to help protect and preserve it. While vinyl flooring may limit the tap dancer’s sliding, each dancer will find that their allowance of movement will change depending on what particular floor covering and shoes are being used. Then the experience of the tap dancer comes in.

Another difference is sound. Vinyl flooring will take away some of the high frequency pitch in the tap sound but there is so much change in tone from shoe to shoe, studio to studio and theatre to theatre that this very slight difference in tone is not an issue.

Cost should also be considered. Most studios can’t afford a separate room with hardwood floors specifically for tap dancing, so “marley” has become the prevalent surface choice for dance studios.

Tapping on any surface will most likely cause some damage. Since the hard metal on the tap shoes hit the floor with such force, it really comes down to damaging either the shoes, or the floor. This is regardless of what type of floor it is. Many studios will recommend tapping on Matlay dance flooring because the cost to replace it is much less than replacing/repairing hardwood floors.

The specific type of floor installed underneath the Matlay is important because it impacts how much tapping the Matlay can withstand. Matlay over a strong floating subfloor will lessen the damage tapping will do.

Helpful tip: Some studios keep a small repair kit in their studios and make it a point to regularly remind students to check that the screws are screwed all the way into their tap shoes before starting class.

TAPE MATTERS2017-04-20T06:24:28+00:00

Tape matters. Alvas can only personally guarantee the flooring tape we sell. Many companies sell vinyl tape but not all vinyl tape is the same due to the adhesive used. Some adhesives in tape will chemically react to the marley-type flooring (Matlay/Marlay), ruining the surface of the floor.
