Wood is the Standard, Traditional Choice
Wood ballet barres are the preferred and standard traditional choice in the professional ballet industry. Unlike metal or plastic barres, the natural product will absorb sweat (won’t get slippery) and provide slight flexibility. This slight flexibility in wood barres provide anti-stress on joints, especially on the ballet barre method training. In ballet, barres are typically used for balance only so dancers learn to hold their own weight.
Choosing the Correct Barre Length
Is the dancer new to ballet and not sure which barre length to get? Here are some tips:
- 4’ barres are commonly used for beginning children
- 6’ barres are commonly used for beginning teens or adults
- 7’10″ barres* are the most popular and give more room for stretching
- 7’10″, 10′, 14′ and 16’ barres give ample space for multiple people to use at the same time
*Alvas 7’10” Maple Barre – Drilled with Two Standard Holes
Our previous “Alvas 8′ Maple Barre – Drilled with Two Standard Holes” has been modified to “Alvas 7’10” Maple Barre – Drilled with Two Standard Holes”:
- This product change is because ground shipping carriers (such as FedEx/UPS) adding a Large Package Surcharge to all packages 8′ or longer in length. The Large Package Surcharge is causing the cost of shipping these packages to drastically increase. To provide better customer service, Alvas is altering our “Standard” 8′ barres to 7’10” in length. This allows us to avoid passing the high shipping cost to our customers.
- If you prefer to have 8 full feet in length, you will need to purchase Alvas Custom Ballet Barres instead. All “Custom” barres ordered as 8′ long will be 8′ in length and within our barre length tolerance. View our FAQ or our barre length tolerance.

Spacing for Brackets (Standard Barres)
The holes in Alvas Standard Barres are always separated by multiples of 16” to allow the mounting of every bracket directly into a wall stud- most wood wall studs are 16” apart. (If you are unsure of your stud spacing, we recommend using an electronic wood wall stud finder or consulting a contractor).
Holes are pre-drilled into the barres so that Alvas Wall Mount Ballet Barre Fixed Brackets and Extensions (on Wall Mount Ballet Barre Adjustable Brackets, Freestanding Ballet Barre Frames and Floor Mounted Ballet Barre Frames) are ready for installation and actually screw into the rear side of the barre. This allows your hand or foot to slide across the barre without hitting the brackets.
